We do our best to assess the risks to which the traveler will be exposed, and try to recommend the most appropriate forms of protection. To do so requires knowledge of geography, tropical and many other fields of medicine, epidemiology and human behavior. It also requires knowledge of each individual traveler.

In assessing these risks, we consider the following:

• Duration - Someone going away for a few days is at less risk than a person relocating for several years.

• Purpose - Certain activities, such as medical work, present a greater risk than spending time sightseeing.

• Style of Travel - The budget-minded backpacker or person returning home to visit their family will have greater exposure than the business person who generally stays in their hotel.

• Age - Certain age groups or types of behavior might be more susceptible to certain infections.

• Time of Year - Certain infections may be seasonal, such as malaria.

• Urban vs. Rural - Many infections are only found in rural areas, such as Japanese encephalitis, while others, such as dengue fever, may be in urban settings.

• Medical Conditions - HIV infection, diabetes, heart disease and pregnancy are only a few of the conditions that will affect the risk of travel.

• Destination - It can definitely make a difference where you are going. For example, the Bahamas are not usually a problem, but Haiti certainly can be!
